Fiber-Optic Airplane Seismology on the Northeast Greenland Ice Stream

چکیده
Abstract We present distributed fiber-optic sensing data from an airplane landing near the EastGRIP ice core drilling site on Northeast Greenland Ice Stream. The recordings of exceptional clarity contain at least 15 easily visible wave propagation modes corresponding to various Rayleigh, pseudoacoustic, and leaky waves. In frequency range 8 55 Hz, seven can be identified unambiguously. Based a priori firn model that matches P-wave dispersion fundamental Rayleigh mode, Backus–Gilbert inversion yields S-wavespeed with resolution lengths as low few meters uncertainties in only 10 m/s. An empirical scaling S wavespeed density leads depth estimate firn–ice transition between 65 71 m, agreement direct measurements. This work underlines potential combined strong unconventional seismic sources studies properties, which are critical ingredients climatology, well sheet dynamics mass balance calculations.

Glacial rumblings from Jakobshavn ice stream, Greenland
The steep increase in Greenland’s glacial earthquake activity detected by the Global Seismographic Network since the late 1990s suggests that a close inspection of these events might provide clues to the nature and origin of such seismic activity. Here we discuss the detection of large, unexpected seismic events of extraordinarily long duration (10–40min) occurring about once every 2 days, and ...
متن کاملThe effect of the north-east ice stream on the Greenland ice sheet in changing climates
The northeast Greenland ice stream (NEGIS) was discovered as a large fast-flow feature of the Greenland ice sheet by synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaginary of the ERS-1 satellite. In this study, the NEGIS is implemented in the dy-namic/thermodynamic, large-scale ice-sheet model SICOPOLIS (Simulation Code for 5 POLythermal Ice Sheets). In the first step, we simulate the evolution of the ice sh...
متن کاملMicrobial abundance in surface ice on the Greenland Ice Sheet
Measuring microbial abundance in glacier ice and identifying its controls is essential for a better understanding and quantification of biogeochemical processes in glacial ecosystems. However, cell enumeration of glacier ice samples is challenging due to typically low cell numbers and the presence of interfering mineral particles. We quantified for the first time the abundance of microbial cell...
متن کاملThe ablation zone in northeast Greenland: ice types, albedos and impurities
Ice types, albedos and impurity content are characterized for the ablation zone of the Greenland ice sheet in Kronprinz Christians Land (808N, 248W). Along this ice margin the width of the ablation zone is only about 8 km. The emergence and melting of old ice in the ablation zone creates a surface layer of dust that was originally deposited with snowfall high on the ice sheet. This debris cover...
